Set majestically on the White Cliffs of Dover is Dover Castle. The castle is often referred to as the ‘Key to England’ as it was Dover that was the most likely area for invasion from foreign troops as it is the nearest place to foreign soil. In its 2000 year history the castle has witnessed an extraordinary history including a significant role during World War II, especially during the evacuation of Dunkirk. Visitors can now walk through the maze of secret wartime tunnels and see how personnel stationed here lived during the war years.
Another of Dover’s great historical buildings has to be the Roman Painted House. It was built back in AD 200 as a form of Roman hotel to look after those travelling from across the Channel. Today you can see the clear structure of the house and fragments of paintings that once lined its walls.
The Dover Museum tells the history of Dover from the Bronze age right through Norman, Medieval and Victorian times, right up to the damage done during World War II and information on current day Dover. Its Bronze Age Boat Gallery features the world’s oldest seagoing boat that was discovered off the shore of Dover in 1997 and is in surprisingly good condition making a most impressive exhibit.
South
Foreland Lighthouse is set on the White Cliffs where
it has been since 1843. It is of particularly interest
as the place where Marconi made his early radio
experiments around 100 years ago. Famously he made the
first ship to shore contact from here as well as the
first international radio transmission to France. Kent .....New..........
