Dover, Kent -travel information and accommodation

The moment you mention Dover everyone immediately thinks of the symbolic White Cliffs, so much so that Dover is often referred to as White Cliff Country.

The port at Dover was one of the country’s main Cinque Ports that provided vital defence along the Kentish coast to protect England from siege. Today Dover is one of the country’s busiest ferry ports taking more than 16 million passengers a year to destinations such as Calais and Dunkirk in France and Ostend and Zeebrugge in Belgium. The port also boasts two cruise terminals for large cruise ships to dock in.

Sadly though for many people Dover is seen as just a stop off point they hang around in whilst en route to the continent, with many visitors simply passing through. However, it is well worth planning a stopover in Dover itself as the perfect start to a holiday or just a day out in its own right.

The White Cliffs are indeed stunning and on a good day a coastal walk is a great way to spend your time. Dover’s Castle is also well worth a look and gives a great insight into the history of the area. Another great way to see all that Dover has to offer is to walk the Historic Town Trail, simply pick up a free trail brochure at the Information Centre and it will guide you through the sights of historic Dover explaining all as you go. If you’re after an easy option though you can see the sights by booking a place on one of the tour guide buses instead.
